Three Weavers in Children Shopping Directory

Walcot Weavers was started in 1945, in Nottingham, England, by Mr. Morris, then living at Walcot, where Isaac Newton discovered gravity. The company made scarves, squares, shawls, and yardage from fine merino wool, but it closed down shortly after Mr. Morris immigrated to the United States. After his retirement from Purdue as a Professor Emeritus in Agricultural Economics in 1987 with a designer and skilled artisans Walcot Weavers was revived. The old woolen products were replaced by an assortment of baby blankets made from the finest U.S. Cotton. After success with the baby blankets the company moved into all natural fiber throws. Then in 1988 Grace Richie Clarke was added to the list of Companies housed here in Lafayette, IN. Grace Richie Clarke, founded in the 1940’s by Grace Richie and her husband Robert Clark, specializes in the finest hand woven window shades. The company was originally started in McAllen, Texas, making table linens for the post war markets. After a few years they changed towards drapery fabrics and woven wood blinds. Old Abingdon Weavers was added to the list of in-house companies in 1992. Old Abingdon Weavers was started in Virginia in the 1920’s as a small power driven weaving mill to make traditional Colonial coverlets patterns. These coverlets were considered heirloom quality, densely woven, and lasting like those woven in the Colonial Period. In 2002, Walcot Weavers purchased Three Weavers, which was founded in 1928 by three young men who worked for a Houston cotton textile mill, and became interested in hand weaving. In 1929, two of the partners moved from Houston and took positions elsewhere. William B. Spencer, the third partner, continued in his spare time, to experiment with hand weaving techniques to perfect a better woolen infant blanket. When he felt the product was ready to market, he bought out his two partners and began operating The Three Weavers Shop in May, 1930, with one loom and one employee. A few months later a second loom was designed and built for the purpose of weaving woolen throws. This humble beginning survived the depression, the wool shortage during the Second World War and a fire in 1959 that totally destroyed the plant. Churchill Weavers, founded in 1922 by Daniel Carroll Churchill and his wife Eleanor, of Berea, Kentucky is the latest addition to our weaving family. Mr. Churchill was an inventor by early trade and designed the looms used by the company, while his wife Eleanor designed and wove the fabrics. Together they built one of the foremost weaving companies in the United States. The company has done such impressive things as weaving the linings for the original Mercury space missions. While the company has grown into baby blankets made of cotton and acrylic, rayon chenille throws and scarves, and the Grace Richie shades, it is all still 100% hand woven in the United States. The times may change, and our techniques may evolve, but all the products for Three Weavers, Walcot Weavers, Grace Richie Clark, Churchill Weavers, and Old Abingdon Weavers, are still made by individuals working at hand looms, with the best quality product in mind.
