Born in Aachen, Germany, Hanne Lore Koehler immigrated to Canada with her parents at the age of three and grew up in Ontario where we now live with our family. We have two children and two grandsons from which comes the inspiration for much of her work. She was raised in an artistic environment by a mother who enjoyed clay sculpting and a father who had studied art in Cologne and Vienna and became a leading sgraffito artist. Hanne Lores love of painting was evident at a very early age and as a teenager she had already won a number of awards recognizing her artistic talent. Study trips in Europe which included Cologne, Munich, Salzburg, Brussels and Amsterdam greatly influenced her naturalistic style and she developed an admiration of the dramatic realism of the Dutch Masters of the nineteenth century. A study trip to Mexico included the wall murals of the Presidential Palace in Mexico City depicting the human figure in action. This is echoed in her preference to paint action-filled compositions rather than the stoic apathetic formal portrait. For this, watercolor emerged as the natural medium for Hanne Lores artistic expression. It is unpredictable and spontaneous, totally suited to her instinctive and impulsive nature. Although she did not have a formal education in art, when it comes to her work, as in her life, she has always followed her heart.
